The plan was to max out my training Memorial Day weekend. So I could then taper for 2weeks. I had to keep this training controlled though. That meant I couldn’t let myself go 100+ bike through the mountains and do a 20+ mile run. Which I would prefer. I love high volume training. But I needed to keep it at a high intensity this weekend at shorter milage. I was to do a 60 mile ride and a 8 mile run Saturday on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
I started at the lowest point on the parkway and went North. You pretty much spend the entire time climbing until you decide to turn around. Wow it was beautiful. So peaceful. It was just me, the sound of wind through the trees, birds, streams, and waterfalls. Temps were perfect. And really not too much car traffic. I’ve done this route plenty of times now, but for some reason this was the best one. Perhaps it had something to do with my bike fitness. I hope to go back a couple more times this summer.
I ended up doing a 78 mile ride instead as I just couldn’t help myself. And I opted to do a short tempo run after and my long run the next day.
So after about 4 hours 15 minutes of pretty hard cycling I loaded my bike into the car and went for a short 20 minute tempo run. At the time it hardly felt like I just biked as my running legs felt great.
The training session in the mountains hit me hard the next day. My legs were toast.
Sunday my sister and I drove back to the Beach from my Moms apartment and we went kayaking in the Back Bay. It was fun. And I spent over 3 hours rowing us around the choppy bay. I’ve always wanted to kayak back there so I was happy we did that.
So I ended up doing my last long run Monday at Sandbridge in the blistering heat. I wanted to see how long I could keep a sub 6 min/mile pace on tired legs. The last few miles were not pretty. After a little R&R on the beach with my mom and sister I went for a 1 mile ocean swim. For whatever reason I’m still pulling to the left a little bit in the open water so I’m trying to fix that.
Overall it was an excellent weekend of training and spending time with my family. If only there was more time.
My body is telling me I need a break. This week is I will be going lite on the cycling/running side. Instead spending more time on my TP Roller and stretching and swimming. Only 2 weeks until Eagleman!!
